Wall Mirrors
Wall Mirrors are an excellent way to make a design statement in your home. They can form a stylish centre-piece in any room. Our range of Wall Mirrors draw on many influences from Gothic styles to Rococo.
Wall Mirrors, like picture frames, are decorative and so are rarely subjected to much wear. As a result they are often ornately carved, gilded, or painted. From the late 18th century mirrors got bigger as the glass making techniques became more sophisticated. Convex mirrors were fashionable in Britain and the United States and were used in dining rooms to give servants an all round view of the table.
Overmantel mirrors were popular they were often of a more rectilinear design and were intended to hang over the fireplace. Rococo Mirrors were often made from softwood, so that it was possible to carve curves, scalloped shells and ornate cartouches. Popular motifs included shells, leaves and birds, the joints were gessoed and painted with gold or silver. Each nation had its own style of mirror, Italian mirrors often had many smaller pieces of glass alongside the main mirror, German mirrors were exceedingly ornate and favoured cresting and scrolling, American Chippendale mirrors were often made of highly polished mahogany, English mirrors were sometimes made of walnut with gilt carvings.
