In the first half of the 18th century furniture design was mainly influenced by France, and it was here that the rococo style reached its height in the exuberant pieces that decorated the palaces of Louis XV 's. Rococo furniture was interpreted in many different ways throughout Europe and America, but they all had certain features in common. The furniture was smaller, lighter and more curvaceous. Madam la Pompadour, Louis XV 's mistress, was very influential and she wanted small decorative pieces that were suitable for intimate salons and appealed to her 18th century taste for leisure and informality.The decoration of rococo was derived from Classical architectural motifs, Oriental patterns and in England Gothic designs.
The practice of painting furniture had been popular from the Middle Ages, French interiors during this period featured lighter colour schemes in delicate pastel shades. Painting had advantages over marquetry as it allowed for more intricate detail to be added to the piece. The trend for traditional painted motifs on vernacular furniture was popular with artisans.
