New England Furniture
The belief that art and beauty should be pursued for their own sake , became the foundation of the Aesthetic Movement which developed during the 1870s and 80s. It gained support from designers who reacted against the dark cluttered interiors that were popular with the Victorians. These designers believed that nature combined with the best designs from disparate cultures and periods should be reworked and blended into a new harmonious style of simple solid furniture.Unlike the Arts and Craft movement that had the conviction that all furniture should be hand made, the aesthetic movement aimed to create furniture that showed plainly what it was and in which the design and the construction harmonize with the wood. In their bid to create affordable hand-crafted artistic furniture that was also profitable this movement found ways to accommodate the modern factory system, giving the appearance of hand-craftsmanship whilst keeping production costs down. The cottage style furniture produced during this period is valued by all who like elegance, honest construction, native materials and practicality.
Our New England Furniture has a simple design, all the products in this collection can be painted in any colour you choose, but are shown in a simple wood finish. The Shakers believed that whatever is fashioned, let it be plain and simple and for the good.
