At the beginning of the 17th century, the Baroque style was dominant in much of Europe, the furniture was designed on a grand scale and intended to impress. Pieces had lavish decoration which drew on Classical or Renaissance motifs, the Baroque style used elaborate decorations and precious materials to create spectacular displays of wealth. Chairs, tables and cabinets were embellished with ornate carving and gilding. Rich colours, fine tapestry and scrolling designs contributed to a sense of drama and status.
In the 17th century Louis XIV personified the concept of absolute power. He moved his court to the Palace of Versailles and embarked on a plan to glorify France through art and design. Versailles came to symbolise Louis XIVs authority in matters of art, and France became the principal producer of luxury furniture. The exuberant Louis XIV ordered suites of solid silver furniture to furnish his palace in Versailles. Other rulers such as Charles II of England, imitated this lavish display of wealth with wooden furniture pieces covered with thin sheets of silver. Owning silver furniture epitomised the phenomenal wealth of the privileged few.
