Two types of painted furniture became evident in the early 19th century. One was characterised by high style, this was a Regency style that instead of being veneered was painted. Some pieces were marbled, others were decorated with fine pen work. The second category comprised more provincial pieces, country furniture produced in Russia, Austria or around Bavaria. These pieces were often larger armoires and chests and were decorated with more pattern and colour.
Decorative features in the 19th century were drawn from the same historical sources that influenced the architecture and and fine arts of the time – Gothic, Rococo and neoclassical styles all enjoyed a revival at this time. Increased mechanisation meant that furniture could be produced more easily and improved transport meant that new ideas and designs were adopted.
The style of the country is invariable one of simplicity and practicality, developed as a natural response to the the landscape and the local conditions. The blues and greys of the furniture in this collection are one of the keynotes for simple French country style. The colours echo the Provençal sea and sky, it reminds of of lazy days and holidays. A small French dresser is even more appealing when painted in blue and large bookcase can be softened with a simple grey paint.
