The practice of painting furniture was popular in the Middle Ages but it reached its peak in the second half of the 18th century. French interiors during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI featured lighter coloured schemes in delicate pastel shades. Pieces were painted to match a rooms overall colour scheme. In England , architects such as Robert Adams also designed colour coordinated interiors. Often the design motifs used on the ceilings of grand rooms were repeated in the textiles and the furniture. At first this repetition was done using lighter woods and marquetry for decoration but as the style developed furniture such as chairs, tables dressers were sometimes painted to match the overall scheme. Painting has the advantage over marquetry, as it allows more intricate detail and requires less time to complete the work.
Painted furniture continued in popularity during the 20th century because it had similarities to the type of decoration that was found in old French châteaux and English country houses, where furniture is painted and repainted to refresh the look. This old money style evoked unassuming good taste and furniture that has been in the family for generations.
