Sofas & Armchairs

Our sofas and armchairs will help turn your house into a home. We believe that furniture should reflect the person who bought it, and not the shop they bought it from. Thats why at Carter&Rose we source our sofas and chairs with individuality in mind. Whether it is our contemporary Josette Sofa and Chairs or our French style Cannes Love Seat and Sofa, we are sure that somewhere in our eclectic range you will find something you like.

The variety of chairs and sofas burgeoned in the mid to late 18th century, with French styles being popular. Elements of the Baroque and Rococo styles lingered, chairs began to look more Neo Classical and became squarer and straighter. Cabriole legs were replaced by tapered supports, and oval or rectangular chair backs became more common.

Sofas in the early 19th century reached new levels of comfort. They were nearly always upholstered, often in silk, damask, velvet and chintzes. At the beginning of the century the sofa sides tended to be straight but gradually fashion dictated they scroll outwards. During this period the day bed or chaise longue became more popular. These elegant pieces were specifically designed for reclining and were intended for use in the drawing room or a lady's bedroom.
