During the first part of the 18th century people tended to eat at small tables, but in the middle of the century saw the development of the longer and larger dining table. Often these tables were simple and plain, but as the century progressed the tables became more ornate and designers such as Chippendale produced tables with half round ends and deep, rectangular drop leaves. Table legs were influenced by the Neoclassical style and were slender and tapering in shape. The dining chair designs that Chippendale created offer a sample of the various trends that in the late 18th century, such as Rococo, Chinese, Gothic, and Neoclassical. Despite this variety of influences many Chippendale chairs followed a similar pattern with their stylistic influences being most obvious in their carving, cartouche shapes and scrolling acanthus for Rococo, Gothic arches, Chinoiserie fretwork, and interlacing ribbons typical of Neoclassicism. This look continues to influence dining chairs for to this day.
