During the early 19th century chests of drawers tended to be box-like, they were restricted by the rectangular shape of the drawers. The commode, a more elaborate chest, contrived to contain the drawers with a serpentine or bombe shape, but the chest of drawer maintained a steady shape over the centuries. The commode which had been a key feature of drawing rooms gradually fell out of fashion and also on the wane were tallboys and chest-on-chests. However during this period different types of chests gained popularity. The French Empire chest was popular in Europe. it was rectangular, usually with a marble top. Other chests were in Louis XVI style and had a more delicate look and tapering legs. The Wellington chest, named after the famous commander, was a similar to a miniature tallboy and a French semanier. Due to their widespread use and relatively simple carcass construction, chest of drawers had a huge range of surface decoration from veneering in exotic timber such as mahogany or rosewood, to painting, which was useful to cover more simple woods. In Europe they favoured walnut whilst in the United States cherry wood was sometimes used.
